Dear Friends,

As if by magic, after I wrote about the subject of wills and lawyers recently, some of our partner law firms have contacted us to ask whether we have any more seniors whom we would like to refer for the free preparation of life planning documents (wills and advance directives).  We have recently referred a number of seniors to firms for this service but are about to run out of cases — so if you know of any eligible and interested seniors, please do contact us!

As a reminder, here are our eligibility criteria:

To be eligible, a senior must:

a) live in Manhattan;

b) be at least 60 years old; and

c) own assets valued at less than $40,000, not including their home.

So, for example — regarding criterion ‘c’ above — a senior who owns the coop apartment in which she lives, and who has a bank account with $30,000 in it, would qualify for our services.  But a senior who rents his rent stabilized apartment and has a CD worth $50,000 would not qualify.

Social workers and caseworkers should fax or e-mail referrals to us or advise clients to attend one of our legal clinics to discuss their wishes.  Members of the public should either visit us at one of our legal clinics or ask a social worker or caseworker to make a referral.

Many thanks in advance, and please don’t hesitate to contact me or Vanessa Diaz with any questions or concerns.

All the best,

Alex
