"There was a time in my life [when] a lot of things seemed uncertain. My family was intact, but life... throws you a curve ball. My uncle was diagnosed with cancer and the job I held for 14 years laid me off. My unemployment [benefits] were terminated... I [had taken] days off to tend to my uncle who was in hospice. Not knowing what to do and not being able to pay for a lawyer to help me, I called Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS)... We won the case, [and I felt] elation and thankfulness. Finally, things were turning around. My unemployment was reinstated... Then I found another job making more money than I did before. I owe my new direction to VOLS. Thanks for believing in me."

Unemployment benefits provide crucial, temporary income support to people who have lost a job through no fault of their own. In 2015, over 91 lawyers from 11 firms volunteered through VOLS' Unemployment Insurance Advocacy Project, and helped claimants secure approximately $200,000 in unemployment benefits that had been wrongly denied.
