It’s the time of year when we celebrate the accomplishments of law grads in New York City! At Volunteers of Legal Service, we’re also celebrating the requirement that all New York Bar applicants perform 50 hours of pro bono service. VOLS trains and mentors law students through their 50 hours – and throughout their legal careers – to provide free, civil legal services where and when they are needed most in New York City. This week, we’re asking for your support so that our pro bono mentorship programs continue providing high-quality, free legal services to New Yorkers in need.
VOLS Unemployed Workers Project trains law students in New York City to assist with our unemployment insurance and benefits hotline, answering 15-20 calls a day from unemployed New Yorkers. In doing so, we help law students reach their 50 hours for admission while serving this vulnerable population of New Yorkers. Organization-wide, VOLS’ staff attorneys partner with, train, and mentor 1,000+ pro bono lawyers and collaborate with law firms, companies, law schools and 150+ community-based groups to address critical legal challenges in our communities. We serve thousands of New Yorkers who are unable to access legal support due to low household income or underserved socio-economic background. With your support, VOLS can ensure a continued commitment to New Yorkers in need of high-quality, free legal services, including low-income seniors and veterans, young immigrants, unemployed workers, small businesses, children and their families. Consider giving $50 for 50 hours to help VOLS continue this important work.
