VOLS Children's Project
The VOLS Children’s Project helps under-resourced families resolve legal problems that may impact a child’s health and ability to succeed in school. Housing conditions such as peeling paint and mold, impending evictions, loss of income support, access to food stamps and Medicaid, and immigration issues can cause a great deal of stress and disruption, impacting school performance and impact health outcomes. Volunteer lawyers can resolve many of these problems, whether it’s initiating a court action to compel landlords to make repairs, stopping an eviction or helping a family access crucial government benefits. We match law firms with participating schools and hospitals to provide individual legal services to students and their families through regularly scheduled on-site legal clinics or remotely or on an as-needed basis, organize workshops and conduct outreach for parents, school and hospital staff, social workers, and students on the legal issues covered by this project. Parents and students can access free, high-quality legal assistance by attending legal clinics or by contacting a point person at the school or hospital who can refer to a participating law firm.
