VOLS Benefits Law Project

The VOLS Benefits Law Project helps New Yorkers access essential public benefits that help meet basic needs through three initiatives. We provide direct legal advice and representation and legal education trainings. This work helps New Yorkers avoid poverty, homelessness, and the loss of essential public benefits. Please note that we do not handle landlord-tenant litigation or disputes with third parties.

(1) Unemployment Insurance Initiative: Are you recently unemployed? Speak with a knowledgeable attorney about eligibility, seek assistance with applying and recertifying existing benefits, and learn about benefit appeals.

(2) Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption/Disability Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE/DRIE) Initiative: This is the New York City’s Rent Freeze Program for qualifying older adults and disabled adults. Connect with knowledgeable attorneys, ask questions about eligibility, seek assistance with applying and recertifying existing benefits, and learn about benefit appeals.

(3) Housing Benefits Court Initiative: If you are in housing court, learn about accessing public benefits that support your ability to pay your rent. Connect with knowledgeable attorneys, ask questions about eligibility, seek assistance with applying and recertifying existing benefits, and learn about benefit appeals.

If you are a New Yorker seeking assistance with these benefits, please call our help line at 347-521-5720 or email us at benefitslaw@volsprobono.org.
