Dear Friends,

I wanted to let you know about a Housing Forum tomorrow evening at which I will be presenting on the subject of “Housing Issues for Older Adults”.  I, along with Diane Lutwak, formerly the Director of the VOLS Elderly Project and now the Legal Director at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, will talk about updates on the SCRIE program, as well as specific issues concerning rent-regulated apartments in NYC.  Details on this event are available below, or you can download a flier here.

Senator Liz Krueger will be hosting this Forum, which will focus on organizing, education and empowerment, in preparation for 2015.  The forum will include information on the fight to strengthen New York’s rent laws, which must be renewed by June of 2015.  After this discussion, there will be breakout sessions on more specific housing topics, including:

  • Housing Issues for Seniors;
  • Building a Tenants’ Association and Improving Building Conditions;
  • Make Sure You’re Doing Everything Right: Keeping your Apartment Regulated; and
  • Everything You Need to Know About Housing Court and Evictions

Participating organizations include the Met Council on Housing, Tenants and Neighbors, Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, VOLS, the Legal Aid Society of NYC, and Housing Court Answers. The forum will take place tomorrow, Thursday, September 18th,from 6:30-8:30 PM at Lighthouse Guild International111 East 59th Street, between Lexington and Park Avenues.

No RSVP is necessary. For more information, contact Alice Fisher at alicefisher37@gmail.com or 212-490-9535.

Please feel free to pass this information along to everyone and anyone who you think might be interested – and I hope to see you there!

All the best,

Alex
