VOLS mourns the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an icon -a diva- for truth and justice. I was fortunate in my career to spend 10 years as a Clinical Law Professor at Rutgers Law School in Newark. A draw to teach there was the legacy left by Justice Ginsburg in pursuit of women’s rights through her work with the Women’s Rights Clinic. I was fortunate to meet her when she spoke at Rutgers. Her words, her passion, her intellect were inspiring. Her humor made her accessible to everyone who took the time to listen.
Justice Ginsburg’s commitment to public service was lifelong, and she often called on the bar to have that same commitment.
“Lawyers have a license to practice law, a monopoly on certain services. But for that privilege and status, lawyers have an obligation to provide legal services to those without the wherewithal to pay, to respond to needs outside themselves, to help repair tears in their communities.”
– U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (March 2014)
