On October 14, VOLS hosted our “On the Ground” community briefing to hear updates from our volunteers and community partners.

John Jay College’s Denise Vivar speaks below about the VOLS Immigration Project’s partnership with the college’s Immigrant Student Success Center:

These last few months were a very challenging time for students who were navigating multiple concerns. A lot of the parents lost their income. The students themselves may have lost their income. For a lot of immigrant students, government COVID-19 relief was not available to them or their family. So, they were really struggling with the impact of the pandemic. And then on top of that, a lot of the students that we worked with were affected by the Supreme Court ruling on DACA. There was a lot of things happening all at once for them. And VOLS was there to sort of help us provide that legal guidance to our students.
