James Fenton, Senior Staff Attorney on the VOLS SLP, testified on behalf of VOLS at the New York City Council Committee on Aging’s hearing on September 7th, highlighting the housing issues many SLP clients experience, particularly disabled veterans or otherwise with mobility issues. Most seniors we speak with are living on fixed incomes, many of which place them slightly above 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, leaving them ineligible for a Right to Counsel Attorney while still unable to afford a private attorney to represent them in housing court. VOLS testified in support of removing the income cap in the NYC Right to Counsel Program, expanding the program and ensuring specific protections for seniors in housing.
