Volunteers of Legal Service is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to our Board of Directors:
Carrie H. Cohen, Esq.
Morrison & Foerster
Carrie H. Cohen is a partner in Morrison & Foerster’s Investigations + White Collar Defense Group.
During her time at MoFo, Ms. Cohen has worked on a wide range of pro bono matters reflecting her passion in criminal law and civil and human rights. She is currently applying her extensive experience in public corruption investigations to help the International Legal foundation train criminal defense lawyers in Afghanistan. Among other things, Cohen has also previously advised a local social services agency as it seeks more equitable pay for community-based preschool teachers, and has assisted several local nonprofits with internal investigations.
Ms. Cohen is also a leader in advancing women in the legal profession, and serves as a member of the New York City Bar’s Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, where she spearheads a professional development program for women attorneys in Latin America and South Africa. She also co-chairs MoFo’s Women’s Strategy Committee, a group that ensures the advancement of women remains a strategic priority for the firm.
Danek A. Freeman, Esq.
Weil
Danek Freeman is a partner in Weil’s Banking and Finance practice.
Mr. Freeman is a community leader in New York’s nonprofit sector. He has actively engaged with pro bono legal service to support small business owners and community organizations as a supervising partner for pro bono matters through Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses Initiative, Lawyers Alliance of New York, New York Investment Fund, Start Small Think Big, and Accion New York; and as a pro bono attorney for client matters through Oxfam America, St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Women’s Media Center, Brooklyn Waldorf School, Rosenthal Jewish Community Center of Westchester, and National School Climate Center. He has also served for over a decade as a leadership board member of the Citizens’ Committee for New York City.
At Weil, he regularly advises leading financial institutions and direct lenders in a wide range of domestic and cross-border financing transactions. Freeman is recognized as a “Rising Star” for Banking in the U.S. by IFLR1000.

Now for 35 years, Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS) harnesses the capacity of New York City’s legal community and neighborhood-based groups to provide free, civil legal services when and where they are needed most.
Our five legal projects empower our neighbors to attain dignity, security, and opportunity in their lives, including the VOLS Children’s Project, Elderly Project and Veterans Initiative, Immigration Project, Incarcerated Mothers Law Project, and Microenterprise Project.
VOLS’ expert legal team works alongside a network of 1,000+ pro bono attorneys at over 60 law firms and corporate law departments to help anchor the social and economic safety net in New York City. We collaborate with 210 community-based groups – such as schools or senior centers – to ensure that New Yorkers can learn about and access our services in a trusted setting.
