Photographer, Sara Bennett, a former criminal defense attorney, chronicles women during and after incarceration in her photography. Prints from her series, Life After Life in Prison, that depict women who have served from 17 to 35 years in New York State’s maximum security prison return to society, will be featured in Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration, at the MoMA PS1. Marking Time sheds light on art and mass incarceration, and features the works of art by incarcerated people and non incarcerated artists that portray the injustices in the criminal justice system and how life in prison can influence art making. The prints from Bennett’s series featured in Marking Time, gives women a voice to share their stories, and captures many of the problems in today’s criminal justice system.
