Dear Friends,
I’m writing to let you know that, this week, the Department of Finance (DOF) is mailing out renewal letters and applications informing approximately 55,000 senior and disabled homeowners that they must renew their Senior Citizen Homeowner Exemption (SCHE) and Disability Homeowner Exemption (DHE) benefits. The DOF has not done renewals for these benefits in over 10 years and is asking for advocates’ help to make sure that all qualified homeowners renew by March 15, 2017, in order to keep their exemptions. Please let your senior and disabled homeowner clients know that they should respond to the renewal letter from the Department of Finance as soon as possible. Please note that, although the deadline is March 15, 2017, the DOF highly recommends that homeowners renew their benefits as soon as possible. The DOF will be processing the renewal applications as the agency receives them.
